User Personas

A composite character that represents a typical user segment — built from research, used to keep teams empathetic.

Definition

A user persona is a fictional character created to represent a real user segment — built from interviews, surveys, and behavior data. Personas typically include a name and photo, demographics, role, goals, frustrations, behaviors, and a quote that captures their voice. The point isn't the persona document itself; it's the shared mental model it gives a team so designers, PMs, and engineers can ask "what would Sarah do here?" instead of "what would I do?". Modern persona work focuses on jobs and behaviors over demographics. AI agents can help you synthesize personas from a stack of customer interviews, validate them against support tickets and usage data, and update them as your customer base shifts.
